DIY Painting Tips
from Professional Interior and Exterior painters PMK Painting
- Buy all your paint at once to avoid color difference
- Use new brushes & rollers, an important step to
a great finished project
- Cover all your concrete when painting on flooring
to be tiled. Any paint left on will keep tile from adhering
properly
Purchasing paint:
If you run out of paint during a project; always purchase
additional paint at the same location you purchased the original
paint. Loews, Home Depot, Sherwin Williams, Monarch, etc.
all have several local locations and computerized tinting
machines may not be calibrated the same. So the same color
ordered from two different locations will probably not be
a perfect match.
If you do purchase the same color paint from different locations,
typically you can paint from corner to corner of a wall and
the difference will not be noticeable.
Ceilings should virtually always be painted with flat paint
unless you plan to apply a glaze or faux finish to the ceiling
surface.
Walls with high ceilings or any large wall may have tape
and float lines ( seams where sheetrockis butted against another
piece of sheetrock). Satin or eggshell paint will accent these
lines or joints, and is not desirable. Flat paint will hide
these issues much better.
We have always heard:
Satin paint is washable and flat paint is not. This is generally
true, but there are downsides. Satin paint cannot be touched-up.
The touch up will always show, so although you can wash a
dirty spot; scratches, chips, stains, ink, etc. cannot be
touched-up. Flat paint typically cannot be washed with the
exception of the higher quality paints i.e. Sherwin Williams
"Duration". The benefit of flat paint is that it
can be touched up without the touch-up being noticeable. Of
course there is another exception to the rule. Whether flat
or satin; dark colors with a lot of tint cannot be touched
up. The deep tint, or dark color will always show touch-ups.
If you want to put up a sample color before making the decision
to paint the entire room, do yourself a favor and buy a poster
board ( $ 1.00 ) and paint the poster board. You now can pin
the poster board on any wall to decide whether you like the
color. Remember, depending on the time of day, and sunlight,
the same color on two different walls can look totally different.
With the poster board, you can see the color sample on different
walls with just one small ( 20"x30" ) sample. The
other issue with color samples on the wall is that you must
now prime the sample with Kilz or other primer to hide it.
Sample paints from many paint departments are not the same
paint you will ultimately purchase for the entire project.
The sample paints are usually a satin paint and the texture
it creates may showthrough the final coat you apply.
PREPARATION! PREPARATION! PREPARATION!!!
If you
are painting a room or your entire home, it's probably because
you want to save money. Very few people actually love painting.
One small accident can negate all the savings you would have
paid a professional painter. On a typical project we at PMK
Painting & Décor will spend approximately 30-40%
of our labor time on preparation such as covering all flooring,
furniture, fixtures, removing switch plates, caulking, putty,
etc.. Please take the time for proper preparation to avoid
any possible expensive accidents.
